Abstract

On board the ships and platforms, there is the necessity of cooling the equipments which produces heat during their operation, like the case of main engines, auxiliary engines and emergency engines. For this reason, it is installed on board coolers to reduce the temperature of functioning, fulfilling the customers operational specifications of each machinery. This article presents in a succinct way the functioning of plate coolers and shell and tubes coolers founded on board, comparing one with another. However, the main emphasis is done to one type of shell and tubes cooler, the Box Cooler, providing a notion of its functioning principle, applicability, structural characteristics, in addition to the main disadvantages and the solutions taken, finalizing with its noticeable advantages for the vessels. Thus, it was used the resources in books, manuals, articles of scientific digital periodicals, as well monographs related of this subject. It is an expositive approach with pictures and one chart that helps the understanding of the subject discussed.
