Surface independence is a key factor for military submarines and depends on the characteristics of their propulsion systems. Currently, Brazil is developing a program for the construction of submarines equipped with different propulsion systems, and the investigation of the subject is justified. Considering that the appropriation of new technologies in the military area depends not only on their degree of maturity, but on the social possibilities of innovation, the research aimed to identify how the culture of military innovation influences the appropriation of new technologies in design and development of diesel-electric submarines, regarding energy generation, storage and use systems. To this end, based on references in the field of cultural studies, eight typical forms of military innovation were identified, which were used to guide the observation and analysis of the historical path of technological development of submarines in the United Kingdom between 1943 and 1994. How As a result, the occurrence of six of these forms was observed in the case studied and the unfeasibility, under the cultural aspect, of obtaining manned diesel-electric submarines by the United Kingdom in the coming years was observed. Furthermore, the perspective points out that the Royal Navy's interest in missions aimed at diesel submarines persists, and that the trend of innovation for these platforms in the United Kingdom should be directed towards small diesel-electric unmanned submarines, making extensive use of technologies from the consumer market, within a paradigm of open innovationpt_BR
